design and format

Do you remember where you were a decade ago when the New York Times dropped “Snow Fall,” the interactive multimedia story about an avalanche that changed what it means to package a story online? I do.

As someone who grew up coding on Neopets and messing around on InDesign, I’m always thinking about how to bring a strong immersive experience to any project. Here are a few of my favorites that I initiated at Vox:

The 2024 Future Perfect 50: Transformed our annual list of thinkers and activists to be entirely interactive. Developed the function quiz and ideated the randomizer, aesthetic, and format of each profile. Integrated celebrity interviews with José Andrés and John Green.

How factory farming ends: Programmed a red gradient and tweaked the layout of the package landing page to be more impactful.

Vertical video sidebars: I came up with several of Vox’s sidebar formats, such as “One surprising thing” or “How I reported this” — but my favorites are the ones that integrate video. I worked with our product team to program the look of this when we moved to WordPress.

Things I want to do more of:

  • Revive story cards for the late 2020s
  • Integrate variable text, motion, and animation into multimedia pieces
  • Create story formats designed for exclusively mobile apps
  • Game-ify portions of ambitious packages
  • Make something absolutely jaw-droppingly cool
